Back on land and under near perfect weather. The ride out of Haines was absolutely spectacular and quite unexpected. In only a few miles we climbed to over 1,000m above sea-level, but more surprisingly we are surrounded by snowy peaks. One would think that the proximity of the sea would warm up the area, but no.
At Haines Junction we arrived onto the Alaska highway, known as the Alcan where I have my first road kill experience. This is a mythic road, and we are not disappointed, by its remoteness, and also by its ruggedness especially on the Yukon side. Once in Alaska, we are a bit disappointed to discover that the winter was really mild. As a consequence wildfires are raging all around, and therefore the visibility is reduced.
