Slow Bob, whom I met in Baja, lead me around a northern loop of British Columbia. This trip highlight had to be the numerous bears I saw (just less than 20) and the invisible deers and mooses that eluded me the all time.
Loading on the Queen of Prince Rupert, at 4pm near Port Hardy at the northern tip of Vancouver Island.
Self portrait on the ferry.
My first night ever trying to sleep on a boat.
Meeting the Queen of the North on its way south in the heart of the inside passage.
We enjoyed watching this russian build helicopter do his logging work. Notes the double rotor giving extra lifting power.
The famous Cow bay restaurant in Prince Rupert.
Cathedrale church of st Andrew in prince Rupert.
Little native girl at Charles Melville Hays statue.
Dubbed the father of Prince Rupert, he died on the Titanic, and the town never recovered from his lost. Click here for more
The Skeena river valley, was spectacular.
Going north after terrasse toward the Nass valley.
The Nisga’a Lava Beds.
The lava bed provincial park visitor center.
51 km of potholes hell. I was looking for bears, and I saw 9 adults and 4 cubs on that stretch alone. It was impossible to capture them on camera unfortunately.
I was extremely happy to find pavement again when I reached the Cassiar highway.
Bear glacier a few miles before Stewart BC. This place was used as a location for the movie Insomnia. The house for the final scene was temporarily built there. The nicely twisting road was used for the movie unique car chase.
Entering Hyder Alaska. No US border guard here 😉
Salmon glacier, can be reached via a fairly steep dirt road. The view is awesome, if you arrive early enough. It is even more spectacular if you can reach the final view point. The snow stopped me. The glacier is in Birtish Columbia, but can only be reached after crossing into Alaska.
Up to the task, but at a cost… Damaged front wheel, and double damage on the exhaust header.
Riding back south on the Cassiar highway, I was finally able to capture those two bears on camera. I was however unable to get a mother and two cubs on the same stretch, because I spooked them by arriving close to them in neutral gear. A memorable sight though for me.
A brilliant collection of totems awaits you in Kitwanga.
I had a blast waiting for a long procession of school buses in Hazelton. Many kids were at the window asking me to do a wheelie. looks like I was breaking the routine of that season.
Quesnel bridge on the way back South.
Still a bit early to get some cherries in Osoyoos.
Posers at Otter lake in Tulameen.
Special thanks to Slow Bob for his advices and for his guiding skills around this one week one thousand miles loop.
